Nashville
Nashville. I was sold as soon as I saw Connie Britton (a.k.a. Tammy Taylor with perfect hair from Friday Night Lights) was the seasoned country star lead, but, I've surprised myself and fallen in love with Scarlet O'Connor (Brit Clare Bowen) and her Bruce Springsteen-look alike duet partner, Gunnar Scott (Brit Sam Palladio). In the show, they play young up-and-coming country superstars, naive of their fresh sound and irresistibly drawn to each other. Theirs is the sub-plot I enjoy most. I get greedy for their duets and love that there's no dubbing. They're multi-talented actors.
It's rare for a series to have original music—for Nashville's believability, it was crucial. All the music is written and originally performed by real down-home singers and songwriters, then produced by the biggest names like T Bone Burnett.
Sigh. This clip of Scarlet and Gunnar's first duet at The Bluebird Cafe? It's wonderful and dreamy. Isn't her styling perfection? Nashville is stirring up some deep dark unresolved feelings for country music. Do you watch? What shows have taken you by surprise?
